Investing in Career Development

Allison Buss

With Spreetail’s dynamic culture, we attract people who aren’t satisfied with the status quo. Our teams are made up of individuals who drive the business forward, challenge old ways of thinking, and help forge new paths to achieve big milestones. The same attitude is applied to career and professional growth for our teams.

How can we make things bigger and better? How can I stretch myself to perform at the next level?

Spreetail’s Talent Development team is made up of people who not only can answer these questions but are also focused on supporting personal and professional development for the success of every Spreetailer. This team is made up of a few small and mighty groups, working to make every step of growth at Spreetail engaging and rewarding.

  • New Employee Experience welcomes and educates new Spreetailers over the course of their first few months. This team builds programming that involves pre-onboarding, first-week training, and multiple follow-up touchpoints during the new employee's first 90 days. Pre-onboarding takes place in the two weeks before a new employee starts when they receive a detailed schedule for their first week and instructions on how to connect with us. Team members participate in our onboarding program, Discover Spreetail, throughout their first three days to learn everything they’ll need to be successful as they start their new role. The Discover Spreetail program combines online self-paced learning, live instructor-led trainings, discussion-based sessions, and recordings to build an engaging and interactive experience. The goal of our onboarding program is to provide all Spreetailers an in-depth understanding of where we have been, who we are, and where we are going while fostering relationships with people from across departments and locations. Around a new hire's 90-day mark they are invited to attend Spreetail Spark, a retreat focused on building relationships and emotional intelligence. The full-day experience is made up of sessions focused on Spreetail's values, participants' personal values, strengths, brand, and how to give and receive feedback.
  • Career Development helps people identify their next challenge at Spreetail, whether that might be working towards a promotion, a certification, or gaining new expertise. We believe career development is driven by employees, supported by the manager, and fueled by our Talent Development team. Career counseling is an important aspect of our overall career development strategy, as one of our strategic goals is high internal mobility and this team works hard to ensure all Spreetail employees have a clear career path. We utilize our online career center and a strong communication plan to ensure all employees know about internal job opportunities, career development workshops, coaching requests, external learning requests, and overall career development support.

  • Talent Management helps level up our team’s growth, equipping managers and employees with everything they need to reach their highest levels of performance. This team owns current and future talent initiatives including performance reviews, succession planning, upward feedback, goal setting and goal management, and more. By facilitating department-wide calibration sessions, this team ensures that Spreetail’s managers are evaluating employees across divisions consistently and accurately, eliminating any bias in the performance review process. They hold teams accountable to review completion at an employee’s first 90 days with Spreetail and facilitate regular review cycles in the Spring and Fall of each year. The Talent Management team also works to provide helpful insights to division leaders and managers across Spreetail by leveraging data from performance reviews and helping leaders understand where strengths, gaps, and opportunities exist within their teams. This ensures a thoughtful approach to performance with actionable outcomes and accountability for progression of results over time. With a competency-heavy approach to performance, this team holds all employees accountable to Spreetail’s core values and ensures results are driven through those behaviors. In all facets of the way talent is managed and assessed at Spreetail, this team trains, educates, equips, and encourages each team to perform at their highest potential.

  • Leadership Development & Coaching work to develop leaders at all levels within Spreetail, while our 1:1 coaching helps team members accelerate their growth and understand their paths to success. The Leadership Landscape programs were created to cater to all levels of development needs at Spreetail. These four programs challenge and stretch participants to prepare for next steps in leadership, whether that’s taking on their first direct report, or joining the executive team. Placement within these leadership programs is based on where people are in their job roles, their levels of experience, and the trajectory of their careers. Course offerings within each of the four primary programs align with expectations appropriate for each of the four categories of leadership skill and readiness. Participation is established through succession planning, performance reviews, nominations of senior leaders, and confirmed by the nominated individuals and their direct managers. Spreetail’s four primary programs that comprise the Leadership Landscape (and target participants) include:

As Spreetail continues to scale and adapt to the changing work environment, our Talent Development offerings have followed suit. We are training a higher volume of team members to prepare to take on leadership roles and lead the teams of the future. With our diverse workforce in cities across the US, we have increased our offerings of virtual trainings, recorded trainings, and eLearnings to cater to the various work environments of our teams. From our fulfillment centers to the office, to the remote desks at home, employees can find the material that is right for them, at a time that fits into their schedule.

  • The Career Center is a one stop shop for development resources at Spreetail. This internal digital hub has upcoming workshops, guides and templates, and other timely information to help support people around the organization.

  • 1:1 Coaching is available to everyone at Spreetail to make their career goals a reality through individual development plan execution. We are proud to offer this opportunity for people whether they are looking for support in their career growth, want to reflect on their professional development, or need an outside perspective on their career trajectory, our coaching team is there to chat.

  • Learning Sprints are all about meeting team members where they are with timely, bite-sized microlearning that can be easily applied to their work life. Our Learning Sprints draw from a variety of experts inside and outside of Spreetail to curate the type of learning our team members crave.

  • Workshops occur throughout the year, some specifically for leaders, with the bulk of classes being offered to all employees. Our goal is to provide training that is applicable to work AND life, while highlighting the voices of experts from various departments. We use quarterly employee satisfaction surveys (Pulse Surveys) as a company-wide feedback mechanism to greater understand the needs, wants, and feelings of our team members. From our Pulse Survey results we have introduced several career development workshops that focus on: Early in Career Development Tips, Managing Up, The Power of Influence, and Aspiring Leaders which have a focus on leadership skills development. We offer a Career Development workshop open to all employees, where we review how to: grow your career at Spreetail, network, develop the needed skills and behaviors, and provide some helpful resources. Activities include a career development self-reflection exercise, a personal SWOT analysis, and culminate with an individual’s Career Development Plan.

As our team continues to grow and evaluate our offerings, we have dedicated ourselves to offering best-in-class support to individuals and teams at Spreetail. Measuring the success and feedback of all training programs is very important to our team, and we continue to strive for Net Promoter Scores and remarks that are better with every round. Career growth and development are already an integral piece of Spreetail’s culture, so we want to continue shaping our programs and workshops around what will help people crush goals and move the business forward.
